The month of May has been a challenging month for us. I (Darlene) received sad news regarding my mother so I traveled home to spend time with her. It was difficult for us to be separated. John was left to handle the ministry here in Belize during my absence and I missed having him by my side during an emotionally difficult two weeks. However, work has continued on the new property and one building is now ready for the roof. We hope to have the large dorm building ready for the roof by the end of June.

I was at home in Alabama during my birthday this year…. So my children took me out for a b’day dinner. Lainey was happy to help her Memmie eat b’day cake.

I was blessed to be able to spend Mother’s Day with my mom this year.  Mother’s Day was bitter/sweet. I enjoyed being with my momma and also being with my children and my grand-daughter but I did miss being with my husband. Momma had a good day and really enjoyed Mother’s Day but it was hard not to keep thinking that this will be our last Mother’s Day with her.

My mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2002 at the age of 55. After surgery and treatments, she did get better but then in 2006, we learned that the cancer had moved to her lungs. She again had surgery and went through Chemo treatments. In April of this year she was told that the cancer had moved to her brain. Hospice has now been sent in to care for her. My mother lost her sister to cancer on  May 26th. Her sister, Joan had also been told that her cancer had moved to her brain. They had been living together and caring for one another for the past few years.

I want to thank all of you for your prayers for my mother and the family. To be honest, the prayers are not for momma as much as they are for me and my siblings. Momma tells me everyday… she is going to be alright… We will be alright too but it’s just hard for us to see through the pain right now.  Please continue to pray for our family. My brother, James is not coping with Mother’s illness very well and my two sisters, Lenell and Belinda are the ones that are caring for my mom… it’s hard not being able to be there to offer help and support during this time.

During the “Dry Season” here in Southern Belize, bush fires are a constant concern. During May, we had two fires on the new property. As you can see we were fighting fire into the night at one point…. Then the next day we discovered that the fire had started again and burned right up to the wooden structure. God surely had His hand on this one. The “Rainy Season” has arrived now so bush fires will not be a concern for the next several months.

The Graduating High School Seniors group from Alabama worked on the property during the last week of May. They poured the belt beam on the caretaker’s house and put water sealant on the Dining hall and kitchen. The caretaker’s house is now ready for the roof.

It has been so dry that we didn’t have enough water in the Village for baths… so we took the group to the river in Red Bank to bath and cool off. This was a new experience for most of these young people but they seemed to enjoy it.

The group did ministry in the Village of Hopkins. Brittany Cobern led the Children’s ministry which focused on the Theme of being “Fishers of Men”. Robby Bentley led worship each night.  Other team members, David, Luke and Will shared the message.

The group finished the week off with a snorkeling trip out to Southwater Caye and a trip to the Belize Zoo and the Mayan Ruins. We want to thank this group for all your hard work and we hope you enjoyed your time in Belize.
